Sanchez was a worthy risk, in my opinion. One of the guesses for his huge drop off was the loss of velocity, and he was back up to 90 MPH, so why not give that a chance for a number 5 spot when you're going into the season with an uncertain rotation?

The important thing to look at here is: Sanchez sucks for a month, Sanchez gets DFA'd. Kind of like how Lereux shows he has nothing, so he gets DFA'd. We aren't letting guys with nothing drag us down. We gave them their fair shot, they did not deliver, so we nipped it in the bud. Well, in Sanchez's case, a little bit after the bud, but still. I'd rather get rid of him a month into the season, than still have him blowing games out of the bullpen in July.

You guys are saying "anyone could of seen him failing, going by the internet numbers" but you're not thinking that nobody ever said he would succeed. It was just a minimal risk to give a guy a chance to pitch his way onto the team. It didn't pan out. Not worth harping over or looking too negatively at. Feel good that we're cutting the dead weight now instead of letting it kill us, like we normally do.

Not defending Sanchez, but at the end of Spring Training who else was there?

Irwin and his plus curveball. Oliver and his plus velocity. KMac was also not yet hurt, although it was clear something was off. Even Mazzaro, Gomez, or Kris Johnson would have been better. Or the released Zach Stewart. Despite volumes of information, teams still fall for spring training stats, its maddening. In this case Sanchez was terrible for 1/2 of ST and good for the second 1/2, even smaller sample nonsense to waste $1.4 million of our tight budget.

Sanchez finished with a 9.67 FIP, unbelievable!

The guy currently starting in his place: Jeanmar Gomez. No great shakes, but better than Sanchez.

Jeanmar Gomez has the look of a replacement level pitcher, which is about seven steps better than Jonathan Sanchez.

The first step towards solving a problem is designating it for assignment.
