Knock on wood and hope the Bucs keep up this great start.

One of my big frustrations is first ball hitting, McCutchen and Marte seem to be the biggest culprits.

Wish they could be a little more patient. Clemente was a great hitter and if I remember correctly he never swung @ the first pitch

It seems to be working for Marte leading off.

Cutch will work it out. Just a bit of a slump. He puts many dents in the outfield wall and seats in Miller Park. This might be the series we get our MVP back. By the way...how about that Jeff Locke. Absolutely owned some of baseball's best hitters yesterday. I don't think anybody would have predicted he'd be the starter with the 3-1 record.

raise it.

I wager you don't remember correctly. Cutch is averaging 3.80 pitches per at bat and Marte is averaging 3.75, both a bit below NL average, but not near the bottom.

He seldom failed to swing at the second, third or fourth pitches, though, and I don't remember ever seeing him let an eye high pitch a foot outside to go by. Used to rip them into the gap in right center. He wasn't a patient hitter. He just liked to take the first pitch.

McCutchen has been a pretty patient hitter most of his career, too. He always looked like a guy who hit his pitch.

If you've got the timing right and you guess right, I don't see why you shouldn't hit the first pitch. You guys need to remember that there is a good amount of strategy to baseball, hitters are reading the pitcher, in some cases they're up there to make them pay just for throwing that first pitch strike. McCutchen is a guy I would think could do this with no problem. He's just in a bad slump right now.

That's just what the commentators were talking about yesterday, and then he laces one - right at centerfield. Next inning featured three straight hard hits - all just about to the track. Milwaukee. (Of course, Gallardo was probably just letting them make contact at that point)

Not "letting them hit it", but it looked to me like he was just throwing fastballs.
