Skeptical, well, okay. No problem with that. Dejan went trucking right on past skeptical. Calling it a desperation move was ridiculous enough, but comparing it to the Morris trade, well, c'mon. Try to have some basis in reality.

Agreed. Further, simply ignoring Martin's defense, his power, his continuing good walk rate, his very good ISO, and his unusually low BABIP, and parroting ".211! Squawk, .211!" was just lazy.

Excellent examples bucfan. Well explained.

I am also on board with those who believe the obvious, Martin was brought in to lead this team from behind the diamond. Any extra contributions from the offensive side are welcomed. His career averages are solid for a catcher in today's era of ball.

The other day, Quick Pitch dubbed Russell Martin: "Russell the Muscle"... :D

I thought that was an appropriate label (especially currently) for the Bucco Catcher...

I agree that DK was off-base with the cited criticism of the Martin signing.

For me, the most disappointing aspect of the Martin signing is that the Pirates invested the #4 overall pick in the 2009 draft in a catcher and he's not ready to be a major league starter (or even back-up) in 2013. I was hoping that Tony Sanchez would be capable of doing for the Pirates what Martin is doing thus far this season.

That my was concern as well.

Time will tell. So far though Martin has made that disappointment an afterthought.

Sanchez's ceiling at this point is basically to be a good defensive back up. That's a shame, but it is what it is.

... and if that becomes true in reality that is not a terrible outcome for a 4th overall draft pick. Many, many top picks fail to have any kind of useful MLB career. Ask the Cubs about Josh Vitters a guy that many Pirate fans really wanted in 2007.
