Multiple baseball executives at the winter meetings in Las Vegas believe the Pirates' asking price for players like Jack Wilson, Freddy Sanchez or Adam LaRoche is far too high.
"Their demands aren’t as bad as when (Dave) Littlefield was the GM but they are not going to get three good prospects for Wilson or Sanchez or LaRoche," one National League executive said. "Those guys just aren’t that good... They’re complementary players on a good team." A comparison to Littlefield is just plain rude, but current GM Neal Huntington has come across as a bit naive this week. LaRoche possesses mediocre power compared to most first basemen and Jack Wilson hasn't hit more than 12 home runs in a season. Wilson also hasn't batted over .300 since 2004, yet the Pirates are asking for two or three prospects in return.

If the Dodgers were willing to take Wilson plus some cash for Hu and Young, Pirates should have said ok. What is the use blowing money on Wilson and wasting his at-bats whn they could tryout Hu and Bixler.

Huntington is far from nieve... that reporter is a freakin idiot. NH is basically going at this Jack Wilson deal with a simple mindset, to get more value than what he is trading away. If nobody wants Jack for NH's price, so what, Jack plays SS for us this year.

NH isn't going to trade away a player just to make a trade. The article just quotes MLB "executives" as saying that our players aren't very good. Same BS different year. They are basically trying to devalue our players and that hack over at Beaver County Times is ENABLING them.

Hardly. I agree with the anonymous executive: our players are not that good. That's one of the reasons why we are trying to trade them. We are not going to get more than one serious prospect for Jack Wilson or Freddy Sanchez, and we would be lucky to get two prospects for Adam LaRoche for the very reasons the reporter stated.

NH needs to be willing to back off his demands of large bounties for our players; otherwise nothing will get done. Our organization has been accused of being unreasonable on more than one occasion, and in my view, such accusations have been for good reason. The more it happens, the less willing other teams will be in talking trade.
