Not sure what to make of these stats, including today's start:

23.1 IP 13 hits 1 run 13 BB 23 K 0.39 ERA

An awful lot of walks, but swing and miss stuff. But will major league hitters chase it? Like today, 5 BB and 8 K in 6 scoreless innings.

Swing-and-miss is always good, since that indicates velocity, movement, or both.

It is more likely for a pitcher to succeed in the major leagues when he has a high K rate in the minors, i.e., swing-and-miss stuff. Now, the pitcher is also more likely to succeed with command, but if he is dealing at 95+ and has the nasty slider I read about, then he can work on command.

It is more difficult to "work on" throwing 95 and a darting slider.

He has a MLB arm, but he stalled at AA for the Red Sox. They have reworked some of his mechanics and are now getting better results. He works low 90's with a two seamer (sinker) and has a quality change up and slider. In the past he hit even higher velocity with a four seam fastball. The control hasn't bee a huge issue in the past, but if it persists he is likely a good RP prospect. At 23, he still has a shot to be something along the lines of a backend SP or late inning guy.

He has been excellent ... a shame that Jerry Sands is doing nothing in AAA or the Hanrahan trade would go from looking very good to highway robbery.

Sounds like one of those situations where his ball has so much movement, not even he knows where it's going to end up. Usually out of the strike zone, people swing anyway.

Another scoreless outing tonight, through 7 IP ... did give up 6 hits (all of them singles), only 1 walk and struck out 5. Lowered his ERA to 0.30 on the season.

Saw him pitch at Altoona on Monday. Not sure what to make of him. He is a pretty big guy...program had him listed at 6'3" 230. Looked bigger to me. He was not overpowering. I checked the speed on almost every pitch. Most of his fastballs were 87-89. I saw only 3 pitches hit 90...a 93, a 91, and a 90. He moved up and down and in and out pretty good. He pitched 7 scoreless innings...really had no trouble, but Carlos Garcia took him out for the 8th. He gave up 6 hits, and walked just 1 to go with 5 Ks...and his era is now an amazing 0.30!!!! WOW! He just turned 23, so who knows?
