Okay really, did you view the K zone of that HR? That ball was way outside, it wasn't even a strike. And he MURDERED it. Not many guys in baseball could of done what he did to that ball. So I still don't understand this myth about Pedro being unable to hit outside pitches. He totally can, he just apparently would rather watch them a good percentage of the time.

I just hope -- really hope -- that Pedro's ability to do that is a skill and not luck. If it's skill, it'll happen more often.

It looked like it was on the outside corner, belt-high. He hit it to center field, rather than trying to pull the ball.

That was the difference, IMO.

If he tries to pull that ball, and goes after the pitch while it is still in front of the plate, the bat is maybe 1" higher at the point of contact as it begins its ascent. The leads to a ground ball to the right side.

And I parrot Shark's comments about Pedro having better at-bats of late. He is seeing the pitches better, drawing walks, and that leads to swinging at hittable pitches and driving the snot out of those pitches.

Given his HR tears in 2010 and last year, I have to think that it's a skill.

A guy can get lucky once or twice. Heck, Kip Wells hit one of the longest HR's ever at PNC. But doing it 50 times? Not buying that.

Look at what he has done, albeit not totally consistently yet. Guys don't go on tears like he does out of luck.

He's been swinging the bat better for a few days now. A couple of his recent ground outs have almost knocked the gloves off of the infielders who fielded them. I'm hoping this might be the start of one of his patented hot streaks (crossing fingers).

Also, I'd like to propose a new stat to track: HAI which stands for "Homeruns Above IAPirate". So far, Pedro has an HAI of 1.

I'm still neck-and-neck with Snider, Sanchez, and Tabata...

Mario Mendoza is offended by this post.

Hey, that finger crossing really works!

I think Pedro is always going to be streaky, and always going to strike out a lot.

When he hits one out of the entire stadium, his next at bats become much more exciting, because you know the potential is there.

He will hit well enough to be a good major leaguer for a long time. And there's a chance he will be a great player.

And that's why Pedro will have the time to work himself out of slumps, which a guy with lesser power wouldn't be afforded the opportunity. But he won't be a great player until he does it more consistently.

He's really strong. Way out in front of a breaking ball yet yanked it into the right field bleachers. The pitch was also off the plate but probably most importantly it came off a left hander.
