In the same vein as "Game Reports" and "Animal's 3 Stars" I would humbly like to offer a new analysis tool called,

"JD's Win 54; lose 54; other 54 Ranking."

After the game I will categorize each game as one of the three choices. Like Animal I am up for debate and conversation. Here we go so far.

Cubs #1: lose 54
Cubs #2: Win 54
Cubs #3: Other 54 (loss)

Dodgers #1: Lose 54
Dodgers #2: Lose 54
Dodgers #3: Lose 54

D-Backs #1: Win 54
D-Backs #2: Other 54 (win: Fluky play to start a big inning and wheel play reaction by McDonald. great win)
D-Backs #3: Lose 54

Reds #1: Win 54
Reds #2: Other 54 (win: Wild card of getting Cueto out of the game on his way to his 13th PNC win on another three hitter)

Season Totals: Win 54: 3 Lose 54: 5 Other 54) 2-1

Gentlemen (Doc): Suggestions, comments, discussion?

GREAT idea.

Depending on how the season goes on, the game 1-3-5 losses could be classified as 'other 54'. An inability to score runs (or even get base runners), regardless of the pitcher, is a blemish (especially when A.J.'s on mound throwing his good stuff).

Again, a truly great idea.

Tommy Lasorda, among others, would say that no matter how good a team is, it will lose 54 games and no matter how bad a team is, it will win 54 games.

That means the season is determined by the outcome in those final 54 games. JD's idea is to categorize games in one of those three categories - W, L or undetermined.

Win a significant percentage of the undetermined category and the team has a good season.

My thickness is by no means limited to my wasteline. Again Bucfan comes to my rescue. And now having re-read the above, I think it will be fun to see it.

This'll be fun to read -- but remember, at the end of the season, we have to identify a full 54 "losses" and full 54 "wins" before we can accurately categorize the "other" 54. This could be difficult with the 2013 Pirates because the team will likely play more close games than a very good team or a very bad team.

I've thought about something similar (one of you mentioned this quote last year, I'd never heard it and liked it). I think it's a great idea. Keep it going!

I'm a huge advocate of the 54/54/54 theory of baseball. The "Countdown" thread is simply a variation of that theory. If you win more series than you lose, you've got a great chance of being above .500 at the end of the year. While I absolutely love it when the Bucs pull off a sweep, I'm primarily focused on seeing them take 2 of 3 and avoid being swept. The brass ring is found in the "other 54" and if they consistently take 2 of 3 games, they'll end up with more than 28 wins in the "other 54" - hopefully, significantly more.
