Kristy Robinson has reported from a "Pirates source" that Phil Irwin will start in place of Wandy on Sunday against the Reds.

This will be cool to see, I think Irwin basically leapfrogged McPherson for the opportunity after McPherson's struggles in the spring have continued through his first few starts at AAA (as I talked about in the Taillon thread, he got chased after giving up 7 hits in 1.2IP tonight). Irwin picked up where he left off last year and had an excellent first start.

Worth nothing that Locke and Irwin will be facing Cueto and Latos, one of the tougher 1-2 SP combos in the league.

Altoona curve promoted Tim Alderson to Triple-A. Takes spot of Phil Irwin, who will spot start for Rodriguez Sunday. That move yet official.

McPherson is on the DL with forearm stiffness.

Hope he does better than Sanchez. Rough first inning. Bats need to help out today.

Dude has excellent control. Didn't show today. Jitters. His velocity is average but when he's painting the corners he's tough. Watched him during a start in altoona a couple years ago when I was visiting friends in happy valley. Hopefully his next start will be more relaxed.

Was the "stiffness" caused by that pic that was posted here?

Irwin has developed a cult following due to his excellent curveball. There are two fangraphs posts from the weekend with GIFs of his deuce.

http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/daily-no ... -pleasure/

http://www.fangraphs.com/not/obligatory ... ng-strike/

Irwin threw 38 fastballs at average velocity of 90.0 yesterday and 39 curveballs at 80.9, per pitch fx, his FIP was 3.85.

I'd like to see him get another shot.
