A win is nice. Very nice. Still only had 5 hits. Offense needs to get going.

Great work out of the bullpen tonight. The Pirates don't win the game without the effort by Wilson. Good stuff.

Does Wilson have stamina issues? said he was a starter at triple a. Kids got special stuff. Great win. Lots of positives to take away from the win. Hopefully wandy is ok

Was wondering the same thing. He started all through the minors until recently. Threw a shared no-hitter last year. Obviously he's not going to be at 96-97 mph starting, but if he could get a third pitch going, he could definitely start and be effective. Did he walk anyone last night? That would be the big issue.

Justin Wilson ... holy crimony, he is dealing. Spotting a 96-97 mph fastball on both sides of the plate, and dropped a hammer of a curve on the bad guys' Marte.

When that kid can throw 97 mph on the outside corner, it's plain unfair. Makes me wish he could do that as a starter. But I'll take an ultra-effective middle reliever. Maybe he could be a 2013 lefty version of 2012 Brad Lincoln...

I'd take that in a heartbeat, John.

Control was the problem. They had moved Wilson to the bullpen in AAA twice the last two years after giving him a lot of chances to start, and that's when his velocity increased and got into the upper 90s. The storyline when he got his September call-up last year was basically that ... his stuff was unhittable at times but he still struggled with control and needed to be more consistent throwing strikes. If what we saw last night was even remotely semi-consistent then that would a mighty good piece in the bullpen.

If keeping him in the pen can keep Gomez off the mound, I'm for keeping him there.

Why does Gomez as a Pirate even exist?

They obviously think Gomez can contribute or they wouldn't have given him a job.

I wish I had seen Wilson dealing but I fell asleep. He may still be be a candidate for the rotation eventually, but for now it looks like they made a good decision putting him where he is.

Wandy's injury was to his left hamstring, down towards his knee. It didn't look to be serious but you never know with hammys.

Gomez has a track record of awfulness. And he was only credited with one ER allowed yesterday, so statistically, he doesn't look that bad. Even though he was.

Hey I've got a new Jared Hughes!

I'll bite . . . a "mop up" guy to eat innings and protect more valuable bullpen arms in case Sanchez, Locke or even MickieD lays a giant egg. Better to have Gomez to pitch in those situations than to have McPherson rot in the bullpen. Better to have McPherson get his innings in Indy.

BTW . . . I don't disagree with the assessment of Gomez; he's not good. But he's not completely dissimilar than a lot of other "12th men" on other teams' rosters. He'll have an occassional decent outing at the most but his value will be found in chewing up innings and allowing others to rest.

Amen #9... Every staff has these kinds of stinkers. We have had them for years. In the proper role, Gomez will be ok

That's fine, but if he's the mop-up guy, I'd rather not see him pitch in a game the Pirates are WINNING.

True, but no one was prepared for Wandy to go down like he did.

He'll be replaced by Karstens soon enough and that will be a huge upgrade for the pen.

He has control issues. Averaged around 4.5 BB/9 innings through the minors. I don't think they've entirely shut the door on him as a starter, but he's going to have to reduce those walks to get a chance at the rotation in the future.

He looked bad last night, but in LA he was a ground ball machine.
