We can all agree that the Pirates' excruciating loss yesterday afternoon is but one of 162 contests on the year. Win some, lose some. No big deal. Except...

Look what's coming:

Fri, Apr 5 @ LA Dodgers 10:10 PM Sanchez (0-0) Greinke (0-0)
Sat, Apr 6 @ LA Dodgers 9:10 PM Burnett (0-1) Kershaw (1-0)
Sun, Apr 7 @ LA Dodgers 4:10 PM Locke (0-0) Ryu (0-1)
Mon, Apr 8 @ Arizona 9:40 PM Rodriguez (1-0) Cahill (0-1)
Tue, Apr 9 @ Arizona 9:40 PM McDonald (0-1) McCarthy (0-0)
Wed, Apr 10 @ Arizona 3:40 PM Sanchez (0-0) Miley (0-0)
Fri, Apr 12 vs Cincinnati 7:05 PM
Sat, Apr 13 vs Cincinnati 7:05 PM
Sun, Apr 14 vs Cincinnati 1:35 PM
Mon, Apr 15 vs St. Louis 7:05 PM
Tue, Apr 16 vs St. Louis 7:05 PM
Wed, Apr 17 vs St. Louis 7:05 PM
Thu, Apr 18 vs Atlanta 7:05 PM
Fri, Apr 19 vs Atlanta 7:05 PM
Sat, Apr 20 vs Atlanta 7:05 PM
Sun, Apr 21 vs Atlanta 1:35 PM
Mon, Apr 22 @ Philadelphia 7:05 PM
Tue, Apr 23 @ Philadelphia 7:05 PM
Wed, Apr 24 @ Philadelphia 7:05 PM
Thu, Apr 25 @ Philadelphia 1:05 PM
Fri, Apr 26 @ St. Louis 8:15 PM
Sat, Apr 27 @ St. Louis 4:15 PM
Sun, Apr 28 @ St. Louis 2:15 PM
Mon, Apr 29 @ Milwaukee 8:10 PM
Tue, Apr 30 @ Milwaukee 8:10 PM
Wed, May 1 @ Milwaukee 1:10 PM
Fri, May 3 vs Washington 7:05 PM
Sat, May 4 vs Washington 4:05 PM
Sun, May 5 vs Washington 1:35 PM

Holy sh*t. The worst teams on that schedule are Philly and Milwaukee, and both of those teams are capable of beating the tar out of the Pirates. It's distinctly possible that the Pirates are 10 games under .500 on the morning of Monday, May 6. If the PBC is within 2 or 3 games of .500 after this stretch, I'll consider it a huge victory for the team.

Wow, 7 playoff contenders and 2 decent teams, that is quite the 29 game stretch. Gotta find a way to win 13, 14-18 wouldn't look too bad at the end of this.

We're doomed...lol. praying to the baseball Gods. With the offense reeling, no shocker, it wasn't very good last year, and without the normal #4 and 5 starters this is gonna be tough.

Why did Greinke drop to fourth for the Dodgers? Did have a spring training injury?

I'm completely with you on the Gauntlet, JC. I don't look much at schedules in any sport any time, but holy cow, that is a brutal start. When we've been slow starters the past couple of months. That's why this first series maybe really mattered...

I really don't think you can classify the offense as reeling after 3 games and playing in 30 degree weather.

Only if you're expecting major improvement from the 24th ranked offense in total runs scored during 2012. Oh, and no upgrades during the offseason. Expect reeling most of the time, cold or warm with the rare outburst.

At this point, I will hold firm to my prediction that the Pirates will be 10 games under .500 (11-21), or worse, when we wake up on Monday, May 6, 2013. And once again, I will hope that I am wrong.

Yes, I believe he had some shoulder or elbow discomfort in early March.

Milwaukee just took the lead on the Cards in the 10th.

If they hold on the Pirates will be 1 GB and the series with STL could be a battle for first.

The series vs. ATL after that is looking tough, but hopefully the Braves will have cooled off a tad by Friday.

...not so doomed!

While the sweep against the Dodgers was horrible, the Bucs have now won 5 of 6 against the DBacks and Reds.

Keep it going Bucs!

If you're comparing team offensive stats, do it by league. You really can't compare the results of a non-DH league to those of a DH league. I know that saying the Bucs were 24th out of 30 instead of 10th out of 16 makes your argument look stronger to stupid people, but there really aren't that many stupid people posting at this board.

I love it! "We are the gauntlet". Or, if I might expand: "You clearly don't know who you're talking to, so let me clue you in: We are not in the gauntlet. We are the gauntlet. A team puts in their best reliever and gets shelled, and you think that of us? No! We are the ones who shell!"

See below for the original version of this quote. I think this might be the single best television scene ever:

We are now nine games into The Gauntlet, and, on the heels of winning 5 of their last 6, the Pirates are a respectable 5-4 thus far.

Fri, Apr 5 @ LA Dodgers 10:10 PM L 3-0 (1-3)
Sat, Apr 6 @ LA Dodgers 9:10 PM L 1-0 (1-4)
Sun, Apr 7 @ LA Dodgers 4:10 PM L 6-2 (1-5)
Mon, Apr 8 @ Arizona 9:40 PM W 5-3 (2-5)
Tue, Apr 9 @ Arizona 9:40 PM W 6-5 (3-5)
Wed, Apr 10 @ Arizona 3:40 PM L 10-2 (3-6)
Fri, Apr 12 vs Cincinnati 7:05 PM W 6-5 (4-6)
Sat, Apr 13 vs Cincinnati 7:05 PM W 3-1 (5-6)
Sun, Apr 14 vs Cincinnati 1:35 PM W 10-7 (6-6)
Mon, Apr 15 vs St. Louis 7:05 PM
Tue, Apr 16 vs St. Louis 7:05 PM
Wed, Apr 17 vs St. Louis 7:05 PM
Thu, Apr 18 vs Atlanta 7:05 PM
Fri, Apr 19 vs Atlanta 7:05 PM
Sat, Apr 20 vs Atlanta 7:05 PM
Sun, Apr 21 vs Atlanta 1:35 PM
Mon, Apr 22 @ Philadelphia 7:05 PM
Tue, Apr 23 @ Philadelphia 7:05 PM
Wed, Apr 24 @ Philadelphia 7:05 PM
Thu, Apr 25 @ Philadelphia 1:05 PM
Fri, Apr 26 @ St. Louis 8:15 PM
Sat, Apr 27 @ St. Louis 4:15 PM
Sun, Apr 28 @ St. Louis 2:15 PM
Mon, Apr 29 @ Milwaukee 8:10 PM
Tue, Apr 30 @ Milwaukee 8:10 PM
Wed, May 1 @ Milwaukee 1:10 PM
Fri, May 3 vs Washington 7:05 PM
Sat, May 4 vs Washington 4:05 PM
Sun, May 5 vs Washington 1:35 PM

At this point, I will revise my rather dour prediction and now claim that the Pirates will be 15-17 when we wake up on Monday, May 6, 2013. I'll hope for better, but that wouldn't be terrible after The Gauntlet.

We are sixteen games into The Gauntlet (with one game rained out), and, on the heels of taking 3 out of 4 from the Atlanta Braves, the Pirates are an excellent 9-6 so far.

Tough ten-game road trip coming up.

Fri, Apr 5 @ LA Dodgers 10:10 PM L 3-0 (1-3)
Sat, Apr 6 @ LA Dodgers 9:10 PM L 1-0 (1-4)
Sun, Apr 7 @ LA Dodgers 4:10 PM L 6-2 (1-5)
Mon, Apr 8 @ Arizona 9:40 PM W 5-3 (2-5)
Tue, Apr 9 @ Arizona 9:40 PM W 6-5 (3-5)
Wed, Apr 10 @ Arizona 3:40 PM L 10-2 (3-6)
Fri, Apr 12 vs Cincinnati 7:05 PM W 6-5 (4-6)
Sat, Apr 13 vs Cincinnati 7:05 PM W 3-1 (5-6)
Sun, Apr 14 vs Cincinnati 1:35 PM W 10-7 (6-6)
Mon, Apr 15 vs St. Louis 7:05 PM L 10-6 (6-7)
Tue, Apr 16 vs St. Louis 7:05 PM Postponed (rain)
Wed, Apr 17 vs St. Louis 7:05 PM W 5-0 (7-7)
Thu, Apr 18 vs Atlanta 7:05 PM L 6-4 (7-8)
Fri, Apr 19 vs Atlanta 7:05 PM W 6-0 (8-8)
Sat, Apr 20 vs Atlanta 7:05 PM W 3-1 (9-8)
Sun, Apr 21 vs Atlanta 1:35 PM W 4-2 (10-8)
Mon, Apr 22 @ Philadelphia 7:05 PM
Tue, Apr 23 @ Philadelphia 7:05 PM
Wed, Apr 24 @ Philadelphia 7:05 PM
Thu, Apr 25 @ Philadelphia 1:05 PM
Fri, Apr 26 @ St. Louis 8:15 PM
Sat, Apr 27 @ St. Louis 4:15 PM
Sun, Apr 28 @ St. Louis 2:15 PM
Mon, Apr 29 @ Milwaukee 8:10 PM
Tue, Apr 30 @ Milwaukee 8:10 PM
Wed, May 1 @ Milwaukee 1:10 PM
Fri, May 3 vs Washington 7:05 PM
Sat, May 4 vs Washington 4:05 PM
Sun, May 5 vs Washington 1:35 PM

At this point, I will once again revise my pessimistic forecast and predict that the Pirates will be 16-15 when we wake up on Monday, May 6, 2013. And, again, I'll hope for better, but that would be a pretty nice record after The Gauntlet.

After taking 3 of 4 from Atlanta, I think we can stop worrying about the big bad wolf.

We are a competitive team and I expect them to compete regardless of the opponent.

Who knew?

I agree, Ralphie, but I still like JC's rundowns here. The Buccos should be a decent team but 9 of 12 from the DBacks, Reds, Cards and Braves is pretty damn awesome. And unexpected.

We are a full twenty games into The Gauntlet (with one game rained out), and, having now taken 3 out of 4 from the Philadelphia Phillies (in the City of Brotherly Love, no less), the Pirates are a stirling 12-7 so far.

Three big games in St. Louis this weekend.

Fri, Apr 5 @ LA Dodgers 10:10 PM L 3-0 (1-3)
Sat, Apr 6 @ LA Dodgers 9:10 PM L 1-0 (1-4)
Sun, Apr 7 @ LA Dodgers 4:10 PM L 6-2 (1-5)
Mon, Apr 8 @ Arizona 9:40 PM W 5-3 (2-5)
Tue, Apr 9 @ Arizona 9:40 PM W 6-5 (3-5)
Wed, Apr 10 @ Arizona 3:40 PM L 10-2 (3-6)
Fri, Apr 12 vs Cincinnati 7:05 PM W 6-5 (4-6)
Sat, Apr 13 vs Cincinnati 7:05 PM W 3-1 (5-6)
Sun, Apr 14 vs Cincinnati 1:35 PM W 10-7 (6-6)
Mon, Apr 15 vs St. Louis 7:05 PM L 10-6 (6-7)
Tue, Apr 16 vs St. Louis 7:05 PM Postponed (rain)
Wed, Apr 17 vs St. Louis 7:05 PM W 5-0 (7-7)
Thu, Apr 18 vs Atlanta 7:05 PM L 6-4 (7-8)
Fri, Apr 19 vs Atlanta 7:05 PM W 6-0 (8-8)
Sat, Apr 20 vs Atlanta 7:05 PM W 3-1 (9-8)
Sun, Apr 21 vs Atlanta 1:35 PM W 4-2 (10-8)
Mon, Apr 22 @ Philadelphia 7:05 PM L 3-2 (10-9)
Tue, Apr 23 @ Philadelphia 7:05 PM W 2-0 (11-9)
Wed, Apr 24 @ Philadelphia 7:05 PM W 5-3 (12-9)
Thu, Apr 25 @ Philadelphia 1:05 PM W 6-4 (13-9)
Fri, Apr 26 @ St. Louis 8:15 PM
Sat, Apr 27 @ St. Louis 4:15 PM
Sun, Apr 28 @ St. Louis 2:15 PM
Mon, Apr 29 @ Milwaukee 8:10 PM
Tue, Apr 30 @ Milwaukee 8:10 PM
Wed, May 1 @ Milwaukee 1:10 PM
Fri, May 3 vs Washington 7:05 PM
Sat, May 4 vs Washington 4:05 PM
Sun, May 5 vs Washington 1:35 PM

At this point, I will yet again revise my pessimistic forecast and predict that the Pirates will be 18-13 when we wake up on Monday, May 6, 2013. And, again, I'll hope for better, but that would be an excellent record after The Gauntlet.
