Why not Cutch? Would you lose so much in RBI chances that it would outweigh having easily your best hitter leading off?

This is a summary of the optimal lineup based on tradition, and sabermetrics by The Book.

Standard ////// Optimized
1 Speedy guy who can hopefully get on base //////One of the three best hitters (high OBP)
2 Good bat handler //////One of the three best hitters
3 Best hitter //////5th best hitter
4 Best power hitter ////// One of the three best hittesr (high SLG)
5 Second best (contact) hitter ////// 4th best hitter
6 Best remaining power hitter ////// 6th best hitter
7 7th best hitter ////// 7th best hitter
8 8th best hitter ////// 8th best hitter (or pitcher if NL)
9 9th best hitter ////// 9th best hitter (ith best hitter if NL)

So we should go - by the book -
Walker
Marte
Jones
Cutch
Pedro
Snider
Martin
Barmes

Hmm, I thought traditionally your best remaining power hitter went 5th, as opposed to 6th, where you're stating he would be slotted.

Also, your lineup by the book would indicate that Marte is our third best hitter. Is that what you really think?

And does The Book really espouse hitting the pitcher 8th? Is that because the 9th batter is more likely to lead off an inning than the 8th hitter?

I do believe Marte is our 3rd best hitter, I'm a fan.

The Book does go with pitcher 8th, but I'm not sure it makes much difference at the bottom.

I'd be cool seeing Walker bat leadoff. He'd also help us out in RBI chances from the bottom of the order, that's always been kind of a black hole for us when the situation happens. We'd have men on base and maybe two outs, and the lineup would turn over to our god awful lead off hitter, who doesn't do anything for us. Walker usually excels in those situations more so than anyone in our lineup.

McCutchen is just too good a hitter to bat leadoff. We need him deeper in the order. Teams would probably just walk the hell out of him in the lead off spot, and I know, that's what you want, but when you have Andrew McCutchen on first, you don't have Andrew McCutchen at bat to drive him in.

Good summary. I wouldn't mind Cutch leading off. This would not be a bad lineup against a RHP:

1 -- CF -- McCutchen
2 -- 2B -- Walker
3 -- LF -- Marte
4 -- 1B -- Jones
5 -- 3B -- Alvarez
6 -- C -- Martin
7 -- RF -- Snider
8 -- SS -- Barmes
9 -- Starting Pitcher

Against LHP:

1 -- RF -- Tabata
2 -- C -- Martin
3 -- CF -- McCutchen
4 -- 1B -- Sanchez
5 -- 2B -- Walker
6 -- LF -- Marte
7 -- 3B -- Alvarez
8 -- SS -- Barmes
9 -- Starting Pitcher

Do players still mind getting bounced around in the batting order? If so, you'd be antagonizing everyone bar Barmes.

I'd probably remind them, "HEY PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL PLAYERS, GRAB A BAT AND DEAL WITH IT". With expletives.
