I attended today's game of understudies in Bradenton with my visiting folks and some friends. As always, even watching the Pirates' bench is better than a day in the office. Some thoughts in no particular order:

1. The Pirates were playing a home game today against a split squad of Rays players. To my surprise, most of the starting nine for the Pirates were utility players while the Rays sent a good number of their starters to Bradenton. I thought that it would be the other way around, especially since the other Rays squad was playing at home against a division rival (Baltimore) and the Bucs were didn't have to travel.

2. Our reserves looked good in their approximately five innings.

3. Grilli got some middle inning work and held the Rays scoreless. Hughes and Melancon also looked solid in their work today.

4. Zagurski looked lost on the mound, but his teammates in the field made some wild throws as well as dropped catches.

5. Alex Dickerson needs to learn how to play the field at first base. He looked very sloppy in the field.

6. Welch (?) hit a nice home run which turned out to be the game winner. I've never heard of him and know nothing about him.

7. McDonald had a nice first game as a Buc with a clutch RBI.

8. I forgot that Tim Alderson existed until he pitched a scoreless ninth.

9. The most random jersey of the day was the Abraham Nunez jersey that I saw on a fan in the stands.

10. I got the 2013 media guide. The cover features Cutch, Burnett, Walker and Alvarez.

11. After the game, when we got back to St. Petersburg, we saw Don Zimmer sitting in the booth next to us at our restaurant.

That's all I can think of for now. This is probably my last game report for this spring. I'm ready for the games to start counting. Go Bucs!

Any chance you saw the radar when Alderson was out there?

Unfortunately, I didn't catch the speed on the radar.
