Interesting, unsure what to think about this.

Great defensively, but then again we already have a veteran great defensive SS who can't hit who is starting. I don't really see the need, I'd rather just keep Mercer as the back-up. Likely means that only one of Mercer, DeJesus Inge or Harrison makes the team.

I don't have a problem with this as long as Hurdle is willing to pinch hit for Barmes in close game situations. You don't lose that much with the bat if McDonald's spot comes up in the lineup again.

Seems like they don't like Inge or Mercer enough to roll with them. McDonald is a superb defender following their recent emphasis on fielding. Now it will be Harrison vs Presley for the final spot.

That was obvious with Mercer last year when he got the honor of being subject to the Pedro Ciracio Experiment Part II when he was called up to remain with the team for 5 months while getting about a couple dozen ABs. All the while Harrison was still used as the primary back-up SS (a position he had only started playing that spring), where he was worse defensively and hit well below average all year. One of those Hurdle decisions that just seems too inexplicable to try to understand.

I would highly be in favor of carrying a 5th OF for the final spot, though as I've been saying a lot here lately, the Pirates/Hurdle tend to always favor the two back-up IF configuration. I'd give Pie as equal of a look as Presley for that role. I'm not really thrilled with Harrison though it was inevitable he would make the team as a utility guy, sadly. Rendering Inge useless is a good thing. DeJesus and Mercer at AAA, not a bad thing especially with d'Arnaud injured there, but I still think Mercer could have filled this role just fine rather than bringing in a 38-year old for his glove.

So the backup for our no-hit, all-glove shortstop will be another no-hit, all-glove shortstop... except this guy's older?

I'm not lovin' this.

There isn't much to love or hate here, all of the players involved are flawed in one way or another. Seems unneeded, but there is the long standing trend of NL managers liking good defenders as last game subs. I guess they figure if none of these guys can hit, why not get a glove first guy who plays 2B, SS, and 3B. That way you can pinch hit for Clint and then sub McDonald.

Crap, we now have two J-Mac's.

I think Jim Thome is still available.

Alex Presley.

Was hoping for Clint Robinson. He certainly fits that bill.

I like Robinson a lot but he doesn't fit on the current roster given that we have two first basemen already.

Very interested to see how both Robinson and Sands do in Indianapolis.

He was cut a while ago.

Apologies.

Trying to be pithy.

Realize he was sent to minors, meant to say I had HOPED he was the guy, since he is a good left-handed bat, as far as I am concerned.

Presley makes for a good 4th OF. He has to get the nod there. Not sure what they are doing with the backup IF spot. This McDonald move seems a bit curious. They have really jerked Mercer around. He basically wasted an entire season last year. Now they apparently are telling him he isn't even good enough to be a backup. This move isn't earth shattering, but a bit baffling considering you already have Mercer/Harrison/DeJesus in the mix...

I could see it if they didn;t have internal options. That said, I can see some trade possibilities before the season starts. I am trusting the judgement of this FO less and less. 8-) 8-) 8-)

I know that the identity of the 25th guy on the roster isn't really all that important, but, even so, I just have to say, "WHAT THE HELL?!?!?!"

The Pirates already have a good glove, no hit shortstop. They're not going to use a defensive replacement for Walker. What possible use do they have for another middle infielder who can't hit? The bench is only five men deep. It's going to consist of whoever isn't playing first and right that day, plus McKenry, the backup catcher, and infielders who can't hit. Given that all managers are reluctant to use their only backup catcher to pinch hit, why another hitless wonder? Why not a guy who can hit a little? Or run fast? Or something?

I'm with Dejan on this: Huntington wouldn't know a shortstop if one bit him in the ass.

Sorry, but that doesn't make much sense to me, because then you need to use two players to replace Barmes, and you only have five on the bench.
