So....does anybody else have the feeling that this is going to be a bounce back year for Gaby Sanchez?

He's swinging the bat well so far in the spring.

Just a hunch, but I think we're going to be very happy with his acquisition.

There is little reason to not think he is a 2 WAR everyday 1B if provided the chance. He basically had 55 very bad games in Miami last year in that tough hitting park. Outside of that (350+ games) he has been an OK hitter (OPS in the .750 range) and OK fielder. He put up 3.0 and 2.3 WAR in 2010-2011 and had 0.6 WAR for us in 130 plate appearances last year. I don't know about being "very happy", but satisfied comes to mind. He likely will only get 400 pa's unless something goes awful in RF.

Yes, all indications are positive at this point. I expect him to be a producer, and I wouldn't be surprised if we are forced to start thinking of him as an every day player rather than a platoon guy. If Snider falters maybe Jones plays right and Gaby plays every day.

Be pretty hard to not bounce back from being that awful. Should be able to have a better year by accident, with how bad last season was. I don't think he's going to be an every day player, though.

The Marlins have a pretty strong history of trading guys before their value is exhausted and/or 'selling low'.

Considering that, plus how he did only play 50 bad MLB games before coming over and being 'productive', there is plenty to be optimistic about.

So long as he can hit lefties he'll have a role with this team.

I agree with all of this also. I like Gaby and think we are going to be very happy with him this year!

That's what I'm thinking as well.

I don't think Snider is going to be a dud. And even if he is, Tabata looks improved. We look to have some real depth this season and let's just see who shines as the season goes along.

To me, I guess it comes down to either Gabby or Snider starting, and for me the choice is obvious. Gabby has a track record, and I have a hunch that this year he will surpass his best year in Miami. He is a run producer. Put him at first and Jones in RF.

No matter where he plays, Jones should sit vs. LHP.

This is not the way the players are going to be utilized.

Jones and Gaby will be platooning at first while Snider is in RF. Playing time for all.

That configuration would have Gabby playing 2 or 3 games a week, whenever we see a lefty. I'm saying that's not often enough. I'm not saying that Jones should face lefties, either.

You can have a plan, that's all well and good. But the way players play sometimes changes the plan.

agreed.

That's why we're fans. To decide for the Pirates who should be playing when.

Slow start for Gaby, but he's looking confident in his AB's.

Nice opposite field homer last night.

I think we will be pleasantly surprised by Gaby.....

but have to wonder if maybe Gaby and/or Tabata may be traded later on. Each of them are capable starters...but I like having them on the bench for us!

I hope we keep both. Seems like a nice squad this year.

I agree, but it's a nice position to be in. And I still think that Presley can help a team too!

Presely would still fit well if we could have a 6 man bench. But they value the 7th reliever and the other 5 bench players more.
