Nothing 'new', but:

---

Also, from a Jonah Keri piece (on Grantland):
Quote:
At an average age of 27.6 years old, the 2012 Giants were younger than any team in franchise history since the 1986 club, whose position players averaged 26.8 years old. A year after that '86 team took the field, the Giants won their first NL West title in 16 years. It was also the eighth-youngest group of position players in baseball, with five of the seven younger teams in the middle of major rebuilding projects.

One of the seven teams with a younger group of batters than the World Champion Giants? Pittsburgh at 27.7 years:

Plenty of people have noted how this group of Bucs reminds them of the late 80's/early 90's crew. It's an optimistic outlook which could prove true.

Keep the faith Bucco fans.

The break through to real contention will only happen when Cole and Taillon resemble Drabek and Smiley circa 1989. We had one SP with an ERA better than league average last year and he's 36.

That and maybe only having one or two black hole positions on offense instead of 3 or 4. I think we may achieve this goal this year.

Rodriguez and Karstens both had ERAs below the NL average for starters as well.

The 2013 pen is better than the 1990's team

Grilli, or Melancon, or Hughes do not give up a hit to a crap player like Francisco Cabrera.

I seriously don't think the comparison is close.

Hmm BR says ERA+ of 100 and 94 respectively. FG says ERA- of 97, 103 respectively. So, maybe Wandy by a hair, but not Karstens.

It depends what year you look at Bucfan, the 90 team had a dominant pen. They had 6 guys with ERA's south of 3.70, ERA+ of 170, 123, 120, 120 from Landrum, Kipper, Ruskin, and Patterson. That group was similar to our 2012. Of course 91, 92 not so much, lets hope our 2013 pen doesn't drop off that bad.

Sorry, I thought you meant a league average starting pitcher. The NL average ERA for starting pitchers was 4.07 last year.
