A lot of the most impactful Pirates pitchers pitching in this one - Burnett, Cole, Wandy, Grilli, Melancon.

Also a look what might be a consistent Pirates line-up throughout the year - Marte leading off, followed by Walker/McCutchen/Alvarez/Jones/Sanchez (DH)/McKenry/Barmes. (left out Hawpe batting 8th).

Walker commits error on first play, off-balance throw off the glove of Jones at first.

Burnett then picks off Zobrist immediately after.

Marte, Walker and McCutchen all ground out in the first.

Ugly, ugly, ugly top of the second inning there.

Burnett gets Escobar swinging but then gives up three base hits to give Tampa the lead.

Luke Scott singled (appears that Jones made an immature diving attempt and might have been able to get to it). Kelly Johnson with a base hit up the middle, and a Jose Molina base hit to bring in a run after an error by Brad Hawpe. A grounder brought in another run.

On a pop up with the wind blowing, Alvarez came in and called off McKenry but then dropped the ball and it rolled to the backstop to make it 3-0 Tampa.

Wild pitch made it 4-0.

Alvarez leads off the second with a double, a nice way to start off after that disaster top inning. Nice AB, too, fouled about five or six pitches off and worked a 2-2 count to get his pitch.

Jones hits a rocket right to first, Alvarez almost doubled off but got back.

Gaby with an opposite field single that moves Alvarez over.

Golden opportunity for Brad Hawpe to make an impression with runners on first and third with 1 out but he K'ed swinging.

McKenry with an ugly AB to end the inning and strand two, K'ing on four pitches.

Wandy in now for the 3rd, I'm assuming with Burnett done that Wandy and Cole with both go two innings as well.

Induces a pop up, then gives up a bloop hit to center. Walker backpedals wall the way to center to nab a shallow fly. Luke Scott doubles off the wall (let me again mention the wind) and McCutchen almost makes a play at the plate on the throw, but alas that gives the Rays their fifth run.

Wandy plunks Kelly Johnson causing McKenry to have a meeting at the mound. He gets a grounder to third to end the inning.

Uh-oh. I smell an opportunity to "rant" about productive ABs and two strike hitting approaches . .

Marte with a line drive single after Barmes flies out.

Walker barely missed a HR and flies out to the wall - Marte was on the run, which I was a little more interested in, but that's the second out.

Marte takes off again but on this pitch McCutchen grounds to third to end the inning.

Quick 1-2-3 for Wandy in the 4th with Cole due up in the 5th (I believe).

And likewise a quick 1-2-3 for Tampa's Juan Sandoval (who is blind in his right eye).

Gerrit Cole coming up.

Cole gives up a lead-off walk (full count count that ended with check swing) to Desmond Jennings who then proceeds to steal two bases during the next AB. He strikes out the next batter, and Escobar flies out for a shallow sac fly, careless throw attempt by Brad Hawpe who is having an awful game. Luke Scott flies out to Marte to end the inning.

Hawpe strikes out for the second time (in addition to his error and awful throwing attempt on the sac fly last inning).

McKenry with a single to left, but Barmes grounds into a DP.

Will report on Cole's last inning here and that'll be it for me.

Cole gives up a base hit up the middle but gets out unscathed.

Sounds like it is time for Brad Hawpe to retire.

Seriously, WTF are we doing wasting even one at bat on this guy when we have at least three guys fighting for RF playing time???

Enough with the favors to former players from Colorado.
