Moose has HOF-worthy credentials, but I'd be surprised to see him get in on the first ballot — especially if Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz, Johnson and Schilling all call it quits this offseason, too.

I find it interesting that he leaves, not only after a 20 win season, but he is only two decent seasons from 300 wins.

That's an amazing milestone to walk away from, being this close.

I was surprised too. I'm wondering if he'll get the itch and pull a Clemens and join someone mid year.

You can't rule it entirely out of the question, but it would be highly uncharacteristic of Mussina to do this.

He said that he decided it would be his last season last spring. That isn't what I'd call abrupt, but most guys probably would have changed their minds after going out and winning that many games.
