Got my BA handbook Saturday, they have us 8th, but the list compiled was before Arizona (7th) traded Bauer. So, I guess that would bump us to 7.

The Pirates have a league leading six 60+ graded prospects and a ton (16) of 50 graded guys. The only missing ingredient is the B level 55 graded guys of which we have none. Thus the criticism is still that we have a ton of elite guys but depth still needs work. This is better than last year when we had less 50 guys.

The BA Grades
75-80 franchise player
65-70 #2 SP and All-stars
55-60 1st division starters and No. 3 SP
50 - second division starters, 4th SP, elite RP
45 - platoon/bench guys, backend SP, mid-RP

The also assign risk to the grades (low-medium-high-extreme)

Grades
Cole - 70 medium
Taillon - 65 medium
Heredia - 60 high
Polanco - 60 high
Hanson - 60 high
Bell - 60 high

McPherson - 50 medium
Wilson - 50 medium
Barnes - 50 high
Holmes - 50 high
Dickerson - 50 high
Mathisen - 50 high
Black - 50 high
Kingham - 50 high
Garcia - 50 high
Glasnow - 50 high
Herrera - 50 high
Sampson - 50 high
Osuna - 50 high
Pimental - 50 high
Jhang - 50 extreme
Ramirez - 50 extreme

Everyone else is a 45 or unranked.

Who are the 75-80 guys? The Dylan Bundys? I don't quite get the universal love affair with Bundy over Cole.

There are two 75's in the whole book, no 80's - they are Bundy and Profar.

Some solid analysis by Sickels in his piece on the ranking. But NONE of his Nos. 3-12 prospects in the Pirates' system have touched AA (and 9 of those 10 haven't even made it to A+). So the depth prospects are all faaaaaaaaaaar from Pittsburgh. That makes them riskier to project.

Yep, you can go glass half full, glass half empty here. I do think NH is doing a better job of identifying talent and developing it over the last two years than he was doing in the first few years. Scrapping the ridiculous fastball academy was step one. Step two is paramilitary training ;)

That is true, but as we have discussed earlier, a significant percentage of highly-ranked prospects are in the low minors.

If a highly-ranked, blue-chip player makes it to AA and produces, he is in the major leagues very quickly and no longer "eligible" for these rankings. Manny Machado, for example.

That is just the way it is.

This year will tell us a LOT about Pirates prospects. Bell is healthy, Barnes plays a full season, Glasnow, Taillon, Kingham, etc. advance, Polanco and Hansen see if they can replicate their production at high A or AA.

If a significant portion of those players produce, and the Pirates add two top-tier players with pick numbers 9 and 14, their ranking probably moves up next year to top 3.
