The Pirates will have the #9 and #14 pick come June. With the contention window starting last year and hopefully running through 2016 ish (almost assuredly Pedro's last year in a Buccos uniform), it'd be nice to grab at least one college player that can move quickly and open the 2015 season on the major league squad.

My personal favorites include college OF Austin Wilson, college P Stephen Gonsalves, college 3B Colin Moran, and prep SS Oscar Mercado (we could really use SS depth - Hanson is really good, but behind him (in terms of talent, not closeness to majors) we've got D'Arnaud, Mercer, Maggi, Ngoepe, and Max Moroff - not an awe inspiring group).

This article has profiles on those 4 potential draftees and reasons the Pirates should go after them.

Also, speaking of Ngoepe, this article talks a bit about his background and profiles him and his elite glovework at shortstop. Hopefully his bat can really develop!

Enjoy!

I hear Mark Appel is a pretty good pitcher.

Also, MITT (my shorthand for McCutchenIsTheTruth), most people are not sold on Alen Hanson staying at shortstop. It's more of a hope on the part of NH and company. Given his range, he's more likely to end up at second base.

You are right. People do see him as a 2B. I also saw him play several times this past year for WV and those claims confused me. I'm not a pro scout, but I believe I have a decent feel for the game and the ONLY thing I saw that could be any issue at SS long-term was the arm. It's average at best, but I think he can get away with it. He's extremely quick and athletic. Inconsistent? Yes, but he was also 19. I'll disagree with most people (who are most definitely entitled to their opinion) and say he sticks at SS long term. I could be wrong though.

I think best available talent is the way to go. With all the uncertainty in baseball prospecting I don't think you can draft based on current need. A lot will change between now and June, but I'm sure we will get two very nice prospects at 9 and 14.

That would be awesome. I hope it somehow happens again.

I actually wouldn't mind if he drops to 14 since he'd almost certainly be a solid grab (unless an injury happens) at that point and the pick would be double protected again.

I was kidding. Appel would have had to sign a waiver for the Pirates to be permitted to draft him again. Given his response (and the response of his agent, Scott Boras), I'm doubting that he signed the waiver.

I forgot about the waiver somehow. Doubt he signs it. Still would be funny

If he's available Mercado seems like an obvious fit. Based on his age, he's probably at least 2-3 years away from the show, right?

---

I hope Appel drops to the second round. Punk.

I think Mercado - if he's drafted by the Pirates - would probably be ready around 2016-2017. Think a Jameson Taillon timeline. I'd like a college bat or pitcher at #9, someone who can move fast. A Pedro Alvarez/Cole timeline of 1.5 years or maybe 2.5 years since it won't be a top 3 talent.

Dang.

You're probably right that it's best to draft someone who can make the bigs ASAP; it's a smarter play.

Still, sooner or later the Bucs need to find a long-term player at SS.

They blew the Sano thing and took Taillon over Machado... Barmes types aren't going to cut the mustard forever.

Well Sano is going to be a 3B long term; still sucks we don't have him. Taillon is really good. The best shot we have for the future right now is Hanson then Ngoepe.

He's a senior. Given the bonus structure, refusing to let the Pirates draft him would only cost him money, assuming that he fell that far again, which I doubt.

True. Still bet he does it though. I bet a team drafts him outside the top 5 and offers him slot and that's it though. I don't think Boras will send players to Independent Ball with the new structure.

Why wouldn't Houston take him at #1 and then offer less than slot like they did with Correa last year. Luhnow knows he has to flood the system with talent so he can work overslot in later rounds again like 2012.

That scenario might be even better than him falling back to the Pirates!

Well the theory is last year Lunhow called up multiple people and offered them all the same amount and first one to bite gets picked. I guess I would expect the same thing this year. Doubt Appel is included.
