This topic really confuses me? I believe the Royals and Pirates have had pretty similair success in the last 5 years...

I'm not confused? What did the Royals do that was so bad.

Trade the farm for two years of Shields when they are not close to being a contender.
Continue to employ and start the worst everyday player in MLB - Jeff Francouer.
Pay in the ballpark of $10 million a year to Jeremy Guthrie and Ervin Santana.
Trade Melky Cabrera for nothing in order to keep Frenchy.
Continue to see their top prospects flop in the bigs.

Just 5, but you get the idea.

And they signed Endy Chavez and Miguel Tejada.

That's probably the most egregious (which is saying something).

Trading Wil Myers, one of the best right-handed hitting prospects in the minors, was idiotic. The Royals need hitting desperately, and deal one of the best young bats in the game (an OF'er who was raking in AAA last year at the age of 21, and who produced a combined 26 2B's, 6 3B's, 37 HR's, 109 RBI's, .314/.387/.600, OPS of .987, at AA and AAA at age twenty-freaking-one) for James Shields.

Unbelievable.

Oh, and the Royals were not satisfied with dealing just Myers and "threw in" top prospect starting pitchers left-hander Jake Odirizzi and left-hander Mike Montgomery, as well as 3rd base prospect Patrick Leonard (the least of the prospects but still a prospect who hit 14 HR's in rookie ball as a 19-year old).

Just inexplicable.

Let me put it this way, would you have been happy if we traded Jamison Tailion or Cole for James Sheilds?

Worse, the Royals GM traded a potential McCutchen-type hitters (with less speed), PLUS two top young arms for Shields.

Just inexplicable. I read about the trade and was astounded.
