The Pirates have agreed to sign left-hander Francisco Liriano to a two-year, $14MM contract, La Velle E. Neal III of the Minneapolis Star-Tribune reports. The deal will be finalized once the Legacy Sports Group client passes a physical.

So either they have a deal ready for Hanrahan to get a position player or prospects OR they are keeping him at least to start the season.

I like it. It's really the only kind of project they'll be able to get/afford in FA.

Hopefully he can find the zone. Guy strikes out a metric ton of batters, which would be odd coming from a Pirate pitcher.

It may turn out to be a Burnett type of thing. AL pitcher coming to the NL and facing less power hitters. Regardless, not a bad #4 pitcher.

i like it. It was obivous we were not gonna get a major league starting pitcher for hanrahan so we sign a decent one.

AJ
Wandy
jmac
lianrono
Mpcherson

with lock and olver starting AAA taking a little presure of Cole.

That's what I'm hoping for, and Liriano did flash Cy Young type ability back in 2010 before he couldn't locate the strike zone.

If you think about it, we basically just traded him for Correia.

I like this because it puts us in a much stronger position in dealing Hanrahan....makes it a lot easier to hold out for what we think he is worth.

I agree. I'd keep him at this point. But the pessimist in me says they could dump Hammer for less than what they want to get rid of his salary since they added Liriano's salary.

They better hope they catch lightning in a bottle twice(Burnett was the first) or this guy is going to get paid a lot to pitch 5 innings with too many walks. Hope it works out, because he can be really, really good.

I think it's worth the risk...it's not going to kill them even if he does flame out.

I'm skeptical about this one. Could turn out great but could turn out to be a big waste of money.

At least they addressed their biggest need, but I was hoping for someone better. I wonder if this rules out going after Porcello or someone like him.

A decent enough addition at a decent enough price.

Due to Liriano's age, pure talents and one-time ceiling, there are enough potential for payoffs here (just for past FA SP comp: more first month Bedard than last month Bedard).

Of course, to echo the sentiments, adding Porcello would still be nice.

Is there a realistic chance that could happen? If so, GREAT.

I don't think so, now that Hanrahan was dealt to the Red Sox. Hanrahan would have been a key player in any deal for Porcello, since the Tigers are looking for established, back-end bullpen help.

I like the acquisition, but I wish the Pirates had signed him to a one-year deal. If he stinks in 2013, that's a hefty price to pay for 2014.

Just thought I'd bump this as it's still not official. The Buccos haven't been able to get him in for a physical yet.

Anyone know if he's signed the contract? Anyone know anything about what's going on with him?

Sounds like they're waiting on a physical. It's curious that he won't show up and do one. I don't want to read too much into it, but it's been a while.

Biertempfel says there is no problem.

Rob Biertempfel @BiertempfelTrib

LHP Francisco Liriano injured right arm in Dec. #Pirates continue to talk to agent, but no deal imminent
