Going rate for a free agent #4 or #5 starting pitcher in the major leagues.

If only Correia was a #4 or #5 SP in the major leagues.

Don't believe this will end well for the Twins.

But apparently, Karstens wasn't worth $4 mil to the Pirates.

Or anyone else thus far, just sayin'.

Karstens was a low risk, high reward option for a team like the Pirates at that price.

I suppose that depends on your definition of "high reward". Given his injuries, Karstens was not highly rewarding last year.

No he wasn't. Yet they paid up for a guy coming off Tommy John surgery. I said before, I'm not a huge Karstens fan...his stuff looks like BP. But he gets guys out pretty consistently. Does anyone know if he has a history of injury(aside from last year)? I still think you get pretty good bang for your buck with him if he's healthy.

Kevin Correia - 2 years/$10M with Minnesota.

That's the going rate. Figured he would get around that.

That is not the going rate for guys who should not be starting games in MLB. He should have gotten a minor league deal and I bet the Twins will soon figure that out. Correia has 0.9 WAR combined the last three years!? Jason Marquis got 1 year $3 million and even that is a stretch.

In the MLB stats and performance do not dictate the going rate, what teams are willing to pay in a particular year does. In this offseason the going rate for a 0.9 WAR is 5 Million per........

Anibal Sanchez hasn't been signed, either.

From the great Jonah Keri's article yesterday (http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-trian ... llion-deal):

Quote:
Here's a fun little exercise:

2010-2012
Pitcher A: 8.7 K/9 IP, 2.3 BB/9 IP, 0.8 HR/9 IP, .309 BABIP, 3.83 ERA, 3.16 FIP
Pitcher B: 8.1 K/9 IP, 2.8 BB/9 IP, 0.8 HR/9 IP, .308 BABIP, 3.70 ERA, 3.40 FIP

Pitcher A is Greinke. Pitcher B is Anibal Sanchez. This isn't necessarily a knock on Greinke so much as it's asking why Sanchez might end up costing about half as much this offseason.

Maybe if the Pirates had made a more intelligent business decision they would get more money from their tv deal...This team is one of the worst run franchises in sports...

Well, they did have to negotiate a deal in 2009 before they started playing better, before attendance and interest went up, and before teams started getting these big new deals.

All the more reason to negotiate a SHORT deal.

Yea, this was a huge blunder. I would think this falls under the genius Frank Coonelly's job description. So....I guess I shouldn't be surprised they screwed it up.

Baseball still needs to fix this descrepency in TV money...which I'm sure they won't.

Yes it was a blunder, but at least it only sets them back ten years. :o
