Tomorrow at midnight is the deadline to tender arbitration offers. The Pirates have to make decisions on these players -

Neil Walker
Gaby Sanchez
Garrett Jones
James McDonald
Jeff Karstens
Charlie Morton
Chris Resop
Joel Hanrahan

We always see a fair number of trades where teams swap Arb eligible guys rather than non-tender them. Last year we swapped Veras for McGehee.

I would tender all except Morton. Who ya got?

The winter meetings start Monday and things should start falling into place.

I tender all but Morton.

Might consider non-tendering Resop, depending on if other teams announce their non-tenders ahead of the deadline and there are a bunch of better relief options out there.

Sounds like NH doesn't plan on tendering Karstens though.

Spotty on Karstens, Morton and Resop.

Karstens is solid, but would he be worth the price of arb and could he stay healthy? Hypothetically, couldn't any money allotted toward him be used on a FA arm with similar or better results?

Due to injuries and depth, Morton might not be more than a BP arm at this point... so why pay him more than he'd be worth? Moreso than JK's 'cost efficiency', couldn't any money spent on him be used otherwise and for better?

Resop... could go either way. He wouldn't be terribly expensive, but is he extremly vital to the Pirates success? Doesn't NH have a track record of acquiring capable BP arms?

Karstens is almost unquestionably the best of that bunch, both in terms of talent and use of funds. However, if he were not tendered you could see the logic behind it (unless the Pirates did not bring in another SP; then it would be a head-scratcher).

All but Morton, thirded.

Resop is the only question from my perspective, but he'll be cheap and might be a better option than the alternatives. Granted if there's one thing I do trust the NH regime to do it would be to pull in a quality bullpen piece.

I go back and fourth on Karstens but in the end I don't non-tender him.

Pirates have agreed to terms with Morton and tendered everyone else (excluding Karstens which we knew about this afternoon).

Interesting/surprising with Morton, though the details haven't been announced yet.

Morton gets $2M.

Baffled. Really expected a non-tender and a minor league deal or something like that, until he proves he's healthy.

Glad to keep him, just not sure why we're paying him $2M this year.

Maybe the guaranteed money is because of an agreement to a role change? Maybe, once healthy, Morton is your closer if they get trade Hanrahan?
