It will take this kind of money to bring talent to Pittsburgh (or anywhere for that matter). Not looking at the contract and just the player...I think the Braves got a pretty good one.

He has posted 11.5 WAR the last three years, so $15 million a year is clearly justified, particularly since he's still only 28. The only concern is his decreasing BB rate from 2012, but that could have been a fluke. I don't think the Braves got any better since Bourn is so good defensively.

Good, fair deal. The Pirates will probably have to pay north of that for comparable talent, and at some point, they'll have to.

Meanwhile, "future number three starter" Brian Bullington got a nickel raise at Arby's this month. May even get promoted to cash register next spring.

It wasn't until recently that I realized Arby's stood for "Roast Beef".

Wonder if Bullington learned that during orientation?

What is insane about it? 3 WAR outfielder at worst, $15 million per until age 32, pretty straight forward.

His sub .300 OBP scares me off. Maybe this is an okay signing for the Braves. I wouldn't want him on the Pirates for those terms.

I don't trust WAR, because I don't trust the defensive component. I think we're probably still at least 10 years away from measuring defense properly, if we ever get there at all.

OK, but his WAR the last three years is 11.5 and his UZR is 0.4, so almost none of his WAR is from defense. Its all baserunning and hitting.

Must be a heckuva baserunner, then, because that lifetime 105 OPS+ is nothing to write home about.
