This makes me very sad. Revenue sharing will not fix this disparity.

It's why the NFL is king and baseball will continue to slide.

Wow.

Sobering read.

This shouldn't be allowed. Under a truly capitalist model, all of the baseball teams would just move to the big cities. And that wouldn't be good for anyone.

Cue the discussion on definition of "market" and "market value." Once again, the Pirates' ownership is - comparatively speaking - committing higher percentages of revenue to players than other teams. Yet, Nutting is "cheap" and other owners are "generous."

Yeah, people often forget that there are more important weights and measures than dollars spent when analyzing what a team really spends on baseball.

Decision making is the real issue IMO and that's probably Nutting's problem too. If NH makes better decisions at the ML level, I wouldn't be surprised to see Nutting dump more money into the team.

I guess it doesn't make a huge impact if teams self police at the luxury tax threshold of $178 million (like the Yankees are going to do). However, if LA and the others say the hell with it things could get ugly. MLB has made rules to prevent these teams from dumping money into amateur talent so where can they really spend? Does the threshold go up with the new revenue? If the Pirates can spend $80 million with the new money and the top teams are at $200 million then the gap is actually less than before.

Seeing how much money the Dodgers will be getting makes the seemingly-once-inflated purchase price look relatively sane.
