I posted a BP article some time ago regarding pitch framing and runs saved. As we saw Doumit was the worst C in MLB while Barajas was also well below average. The best was Jose Molina, the no hit Molina brother who the Rays snapped up as a free agent before 2012. Why chase a .200 hitting veteran C? Well this new article suggests that Molina is a 50 run catcher (5 WAR), its full of GIFs of balls he caught that are 1 and 1/2 feet off the plate being called strikes.

The distance noted is from the center of the strike zone, not the edge. Still some pretty amazing video.

For what its worth -

Comment From Darren
Over at BP they are saying one study shows Jose Molina saved 50 runs in 2012 from framing alone. Do you buy it? and if so why is no one incorporating this into WAR for catchers.

Dave Cameron:
No one buys it. Framing is useful, but it's not the single most important skill in the history of the game.

Couple that with Mike Fast's original work and its such an instructive tool. The Doumit GIF's from 2011 were spot on. Basically he had 12 pitches in the same location and 11 of 12 Doumit dropped his head while catching the pitch low and away (to a LHB), on all 11 it was called a ball and on the one where he kept his head up it was called a strike.
