Apparently LAA is shopping him today in an attempt to get something small for the right to exercise his option. Haren's price tag is $15.5 million for 2013. DiPoto is selling this as a bargain for teams that struggle to sign good free agents. On the surface Haren has been a 5-6 WAR SP for years and is 32, not terribly old for a SP. Of course there are the back issues that limited him severely in 2012. Would you cough up a low level prospect for the rights to pay Haren in 2013? We'd get a good shot at his bounce back year trying to build his value back up and then we would likely get a comp pick in 2014. Of course we could just wait and try and sign him in FA on a multi-year deal.

I wouldn't trust our ability to sign any FAs. If they'd think that he's worth anything near that, yeah I'd do it.

Looks like the Halos started by shipping Santana to KC for an AAA arm.

Yeah, as I imagined, the price tag in trade can't be high because LAA is going to release them anyway. Haren would look very good in the #1 slot. I just wonder if Nutting's review process is tying NH's hands from making a trade right away. I'm also pretty sure that Haren coming on board would require trading Hanrahan (which would be a good idea anyway). LAA has until Friday to decide on Haren's option, which they are expected to decline making him a free agent (probably a compensation FA, so signing him later would cost us a 1st round pick #14 overall).

Yikes!

That would not be a desirable pursuit.

If we want Dan Haren we have competition.

Red Sox, Cubs are apparently pursuing the Angels for his services.

Quote:
The Red Sox and Cubs are among a few teams talking to the Angels about Dan Haren, who could be traded in advance of an option that is coming due.

The Angels are exploring trades for Haren, whose $15.5-million option, with a $3.5-million buyout, is due today.

The Red Sox have been known to be seeking a deal for Haren, but the Cubs are a new team. There are said to be others, as well.

The Cubs are an interesting entry in that they don't look like a likely 2013 contender. However, they have said they seek veteran pitching to help lead their staff. It was reported they may have interest in bringing back Ryan Dempster, who never wanted to leave.

Yeah, there is no good reason that I can come up with for why the Cubs nixed the deal other than Haren's medicals are bad. They were setup to get him at a cost of no more than an extra $5.5 million for 2013 by trading Marmol. Haren must be wrecked. That said, he very well could be a super cheap one year deal guy now a la Bedard.
