During BP.

Was watching and waiting for the gates to open. she took a spot next to me and started making small talk.

next thing she says she's A.J.'s mom!

so I told her how great her son was and we chatted ball for like 15-30 min.

She's quite a knowledgeable baseball fan.

Surreal.

Holy S!!! is right! The Pirates are up 5-1 in the top of the 7th.

Edit: 5 - 1 in the top of the 8th!

PS Edit: In the 9th, the Bucs are still up by 4.

Just a little follow-up on this as I wanted to say more, but it's hard to make longer posts on my phone...

First and foremost, I was on my 'best behavior'. I refrained from swearing and tried my best to insinuate how much the Bucs NEEDED and APPRECIATED A.J.'s contributions. I wasn't lying, or just 'being diplomatic', either, I just really wanted to make it clear that the fans appreciate(d) a quality arm like his anchoring the rotation. This became most apparent to repeat to me when she mentioned a few times how A.J. felt 'unappreciateed' and/or 'sore' about 'what happened in NY'...

This may not be 'news', but here were a few takeaways from the chat I had with Mrs. Burnett.

1. A.J. wants to be the opening day starter in 2013. He would have been this year, but, you know, the injury... when she brought that up, I gasped (as I had forgotten). Based on his stellar performance this year, that injury probably cost the Bucs one, if not more games. She agreed. Anyways, it sounds like that aside from winning a CY, being an opening day starter is the one thing A.J. hasn't done in his ML career (and he's aware of it). It might have even been a factor in choosing where he went post-Yankees. Look for him to be as fiery as ever heading into next year and get the nod come April.

2. Pittsburgh seems to 'pass the A.J. test'. She said that A.J. likes it in Pittsburgh, as he's a fisher and 'likes to throw a boat out in the river...'. Him being the de-facto 'ace', as well as a veteran leader/presence seems to be paying off, too. The Bucs pushing toward contention and the fans taking a shine to him helps, as well. Based on geography, it sounds like Pittsburgh is one of the few locations where A.J. will want to spend the remainder of his career (Philly, Boston, Baltimore, D.C. and possibly only a few 'barely East' locations like Cleveland may also make the cut, depending on 'media exposure'), as his family is nearby. In any event, unless money really is a factor, it sounds like there's no good reason why the Bucs can't retain A.J. beyond next year.

3. Derek Jeter is a classy guy. Damn.

I think he can play a role here as he approaches 40.
