Quote:
The Pirates, trying to mine all areas to get prospects into their minor league system, hope they've found a diamond in the rough in Mpho Ngoepe from South Africa.

Ngoepe, 18, is a switch-hitting shortstop who signed with the Pirates about a month ago, then made a cameo appearance in the Instructional League in Bradenton, Fla.

Quote:
"He has the tools and skills of a young, athletic high school or junior college shortstop. I look forward to working with him in spring training."

Ngoepe, 5 feet 9, 165 pounds, is from Randburg, South Africa -- a suburb of Johannesburg -- and will play for his country in the World Baseball Classic next year. Then he'll report to the Pirates and probably will begin his professional career with Bradenton in the Gulf Coast Rookie League.

"He's an interesting guy," Huntington said. "He made a great impression in Bradenton. He's a good athlete. He has a chance."

Those guys can't sign a contract outright with the Pirates.

He is playing second base against Cuba and turned a double play in light speed. Waiting to see him hit, but his turn on the DP was impressive.

Cuba is of course stomping South Africa. One clear problem that the South African pitchers are encountering? The same issue that Joe Kerrigan has discussed with Pirate pitchers.

That is, the RSA pitchers throw away, away, away, away ... Cuban batters are leaning over the plate and just raking the outside pitches.

Throw on the inner half, for crying out loud.

He saw two pitches in his second at bat. Popped up on a fastball down the middle.

He is 18 and playing against the Cuban professional All-Star team, so I put this in context.

Looked good defensively. Handled grounder to his right easily. Turned the DP very well. Exhibited a plus arm on the DP. I thought it was going to be close, and the runner was right on top of him as he threw, but he gunned the guy at first by two steps.

Only saw one AB. He took ball one, then popped out (batting L-handed against the Cuban starter) on the second pitch. Too little to make any conclusions, but he is bigger than I would have thought. The article referred to him as being 5'9" and 165 lbs. He looked bigger than that. He is not a big guy, by any means, but he looks more like he is something like 5'11" and 175 lbs.

Being 18, he might have had a growth spurt over the winter...it would be nice if he could develop a nice bat
