Awesome between-innings song choice: The Ramones, "Sheena Is a Punk Rocker". Yeah, now that's what I'm talking about. 8-)

You know, if you'd have told me before the game that Cutch, Jones and Pedro were going to go a combined 1-for-10, I'd have said, "Wow, we might be in trouble tonight. Because it's not like Presley is going to score three runs out of the 8-hole or anything."

So after all the agita we've all had the past week, the net result is that we lost 1/2 game in the standings. *shrug* Welcome to the world of 10 playoff berths, I suppose.

Raise it!

When is the last time the Pirates had four 10-game winners? There aren't too many teams that can make that claim I am sure.

Me, too. Plus I wish March Madness would go back to a 32 team format. And the World Cup would return to the 24 team standard. Too much money, though, in having all these teams....

Well, the last time they had THREE 10-game winners was 2003.
Jeff Suppan 10-7
Kip Wells 10-9
Josh Fogg 10-9

The last time they had three guys with MORE than 10 wins was 1999.
Todd Ritchie 15-9
Jason Schmidt 13-11
Kris Benson 11-14

The last time they had four guys with 10 wins or more was 1997.
Francisco Cordova 11-8
Esteban Loiza 11-11
Jon Leiber 11-14
Jason Schmidt.

Incidentally, in 2008 and 2010, the Bucs did not have ANY pitchers win 10 games or more.

..and in the World Championship year of 1979, the Bucs had SIX pitchers with 10 wins or more...
John Candelaria 14-9
Bruce Kison 13-7
Bert Blyleven 12-5
Jim Bibby 12-4
Kent Tekulve 10-8
Enrique Romo 10-5.

My memory is a little foggy, but with Teke and Romo winning 20, and Grant Jackson another 8, there must have been a lot of last minute wins.

Oh, and it's not as uncommon as you might think.

The 71 Orioles had four 20 Game winners!

But, as of right now, in addition to the Bucs, 4other teams have it this year. (3 of then in our division) It surprises me that the would not be more in the AL than the NL.

Yankees: Sabathia 13, Hughes 13, Kuroda 12, Nova 11
Cincinnati: Cueto 17, Latos 12, Arroyo 11, Bailey 10
Cardinals: Lohse 14, Westbrook 13, Wainright 13, Lynn 13
Giants: Bumgarner 14, Cain 13, Vogelsong 12, Zito 10

Washington is on verge: Gonzalez 17, Strasburg 15, Zimmerman 9, Jackson 9, Detwiler 9
Dodgers on the verge: Kershaw 12, Capuano 11, Billingsly 10, Harang 9

Shouldn't ours come with an asterisk, though? 7 of Wandy's 10 wins came with Houston.

Point taken but ... Bucs played Brewers and Astros and Cards played Nationals and Mets. That's a stretch of the race where the Bucs needed to gain ground not lose ground. The fact that the Cards went 3-4 and still gained 1/2 game has to be considered a victory for them.

Has this stretch killed the Pirates? No. You are correct to note that the Bucs are still only 1.5 games out of the wildcard slot and, more importantly, only one game back in the loss column.

However, I view this last stretch as analogous to the Pirates being down 1 run in the seventh inning and stranding runners on second and third with no outs. Not a game killer but a blown golden opportunity to either tie the game or to take the lead. They still need to rally ......

This team must start playing better baseball to remain in the game. Two of three against the Cubs is mandatory. Losing a seies to the Cubs and then heading to GABP? Not good.

Yeah, those were the days of 10-man pitching staffs and relievers that went 2 innings.
