Does anybody know: Can Holt play shortstop?

Found this info on the web:

PIRATE PLAYER PROFILES

Holt played JC ball for two years at Navarro College, then transferred to Rice. Originally a shortstop, he moved to second because Rice had a star shortstop in Rick Hague. He had a solid, all-around offensive year for Rice, although he’s never likely to hit for so much power as a pro. The Pirates, consistent with their philosophy, will try to develop him as a shortstop. Scouts, however, aren’t convinced he has the range and arm to stay there, in part due to his size. He also doesn’t have a great arm. He’s not exceptionally fast and hasn’t been a good base stealer in the minors.

Yes, he has played 232 minor league games at SS and 130 at 2b. This year, he played all 98 of his games at Altoona at SS, while at AAA, he played 14 at 2b and 9 at SS.

So I guess the answer to your question would be yes... I am not sure how GOOD, but he can play there. He had 23 errors in those 98 games and just .945 Field Pct.

Because Hurdle thinks Presley in left gives him the best chance to win today, given his alternatives.

I assume so he can look at a bunch of pitches go by without swinging, then give that bewildered look. Either that or to hit a few weak tappers to the right side.

It does probably say something as to how they feel about Tabata...not positive. I'm just disappointed Barajas isn't in the lineup. How can he get above the Mendoza line if he doesn't play???

First thing I saw, too.

I guess Clint can't get enough of that black hole at the bottom of the lineup. Whem Barmes and/or Tabata plays, Barajas MUST play, and so on.

Heaven forbid the best 9 play...

When does Marte return?!

Marte has been sent for rehab assignment, might be ready by this weekend or next Monday

As Tony the Tiger would say, 'Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat!'

Pretty good timing, after the cupcake schedule, too.

Going to need more pop and speed, not to mention valuable depth, vs. Cincy and better competition.

Sounds like a second baseman in MLB.

Of course, if they do not TCOB against said cupcake schedule, those games against better competition will mean about nothing.

If Holt could play SS we may have found our lead off hitter

If he could be steady, even with a little less range, and continue to hit, it might be worthwhile.

I saw him play SS here in Harrisburg this past June. He wasn't terrible, but you culd tell he lacked little in range and more than a little in arm for that position. Offense could make up for that, though. Eckstein made it work for a few years at that size.
