Why?

Does anyone have a theory on this?

2011:
AUG: 8-22
SEP: 10-16
14-36 finish

2012:
AUG: 11-17
SEP: 0-2
currently 11-19 in AUG/SEP (and 22-26 since AS Break)

Does this team lack conditioning? Is it simply youth/lack of mental focus? Does Hurdle's magic pixy dust expire or drop from shelves as the Summer winds down?

It can't be as simple: as Cutch goes, so goes the team, can it (Cutch: .693 OPS in AUG)???

I get it: there have been a slew of 1-2 run games that broke badly. The injury bug and the 19 inning game took a lot out of this squad, too... but that doesn't explain the constant first inning blunders and general 'phoning it in' vibe as the season progresses toward the final crunch.

I'm not saying/thinking that the sky is falling. In fact, I still fully expect a 'return to statistical norm' over the next 5/final 29.

It's just hard not to see the same thing(s) happening again, in terms of 'lackluster pitching' and 'lack of effort' late in a season and not want to point it out and ask questions.

What do NH and Hurdle have to focus on to fix this? Surely there are tangible solutions.

I think we all know the Pirates are better than this.

It's as simple as the pitching. Offenses will go through games where we only score 1 or 2........but more often then not over the past month we have scored 4 or 5 runs which should be enough to win.
