The Pirates yesterday announced former Cleveland scout Jim Benedict will become a special assistant to general manager Neal Huntington.

In addition, the team named Jesse Flores its West Coast Regional Scouting Supervisor. Flores had been a special assistant to the general manager for the Pirates.

Benedict, 47, was a Cleveland scout in 2007-08. Benedict also has worked for the New York Yankees, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Montreal and Texas.

It's sad how uninterested I have become in this organization.

Scouts from outside the organization! That's exciting. Moves like that are actually steps toward "changing the culture of losing" rather than just rhetoric about it.

Actually, no roster spots open unless they waive Gorzo or Dumatrait.

No, the 40 man roster is at 36 now, 38 once Gorzo and Dumatrait are put back on

The moves leave the Pirates with 36 players on their 40-man roster. At some point, the Pirates will have to add back pitchers Tom Gorzelanny and Phil Dumatrait, who currently are on the 60-day disabled list.

McCutcheon and Suess are going to be added to protect them from the Rule V draft. Don't know why that wasn't mentioned in the article, but it was mentioned somewhere else.

Oh...then yeah, the 40 is full...but Paulino, Jack, Chavez, Michaels, and Doug Meint. might all be gone too, opening some more spots

Are Minky and Michaels on the 40-man? I thought their contracts were up. (Michaels has an option I believe). Maybe I need to go to the Pirates site to figure this out.

They are on the 40-man. I don't really understand that. But that will free up some more spots. ANyone know the other Rule V guys that need to be protected?

I think they will get deleted the day they file- sometime in the next few weeks.

I thought McCutchen still had another year.

I thought that in addition to Sues, the guys who needed protected included Walker, Krebs, Romak, and Bloom. Of those, Krebs is injured and likely to be left off. So if you add Gorzo, Dumatrait, Walker, and Romak, that leaves only Bloom that you still HAVE to clear space for. Obviously, if you think McCutchen will come north with the team, you can add him, but that doesn't have to happen until after the Rule 5.

Bautista and Shelton, Brooks and Thompson
Were all bye-bye and long, long, gone, son,
When David the Little failed to protect,
The players in that wretched Rule 5 suckfest.

Happen to me? I promise it will not,
Since Neal and Frank are to root out the rot.
Instead, the bloopers and errors of those years past
Will not hinder this roster, as players are held fast.

So on to glory, and fame, and success we strive,
Pushing for victory parades, and screaming fans we strive.
If that is too much, as may well be true,
Then maybe at least to 6th place we say, "Eff you."
