Junichi Tazawa is a japanesse pitcher. He is 22 years old and has a lot of talent, and on one website I read that the pirates are among the many teams with interest in him. Is there any truth to this rumor?

There's a difference between interest and commitment to spend the money to get him.

I forget where I heard about this guy months ago. I saw a story about him on TV. He'll make the negotiating fee for Daiske look like peanuts.

I actually read that he is still an amateur over there, and that there is an agreement (written or assumed, I don't know) that MLB would not target amateurs in Japan as part of the transfer agreement. The Japanese league is really upset that he might be signed by a US team, but if other teams are willing to do it, then I think the Pirates have to be willing to do it.

It's the infamous "informal agreement". You know, the one that's meant to be broken.

Which means the Pirates will have about the same chance of signing this guy that they did Daiske.

The Pirates didn't sign Daiske cuz they didn't see him being able to play 3rd base regularly...I mean Littlefield had this team so loaded with pitching, Daiske would have wasted away in the minors...

I have a question, and maybe you can answer it.

I have no idea what kind of rules there are in Japan for drafting players. Why did this guy go undrafted? Did teams think that he was unsignable because he wanted to come to the U.S.? I can't imagine that he didn't get drafted because he wasn't good enough, given the interest in him here.

Paul Byrd = Matt Morris, without the contract.

My understanding of the situation was that he asked, well in advance of the draft, to not be drafted, because he wanted to come to the US. The reports I read stated that "his request was honored". Whether that means they didn't draft him because they knew he would not sign, or whether he effectively removed himself from draft eligibility I do not know. It would seem to me that even if he would refuse to sign, I would still draft him so that I would own the rights to get a big posting fee.

Unfortunately, I don't see any way that the Pirates could be the top bidder for his services. And, even if they were, they would have to overpay by a large margin to get him to play here, I would think.

Boston Herald today is reporting that the Red Sox are the perceived front-runner for Tazawa. The URL, in case anyone is interested in reading the piece:

Found this nugget:

O'Brien has more. He says the Braves made a multiyear offer to Tazawa, and will know his decision in a few weeks. In an earlier post, O'Brien passed along a rumor that the Braves' offer topped the $6MM Pedro Alvarez received.

Via mlbtraderumors, of course.

I can't see the Pirates topping that. Not sure that they should, either.
