Pointed out about 1/2 hour ago that the tie breaker for the wild card is head-to-head record. As the series between the Cards and Bucs is 7-7, this game is potentially huge.

Tonight's win is equivalent to gaining a game and a half on St. Louis. Overall tie gives the Bucs the playoff nod. Hoist the colors!

Games against teams against whom we are competing for a playoff spot are worth two games. If you win, you gain a game. If you lose, you lose a game. Two game difference. No possibility of another team beating the competition to "even out" the loss.

Further, you are correct that the tie breaker is half a game advantage, so tonight's win was basically worth 2 1/2 games in the standings.

Is that tiebreaker just for home field advantage? Or could it be used to determine who gets into the playoffs?

No ... it is determinative of which of the two teams earns the playoff spot. There is no play-in game if two teams are tied for last wildcard slot.

I hate to burst everyone's bubble, but this is not correct. The broadcasters got it wrong. If the Pirates and Cardinals finish tied for the 2nd wild-card spot, there WILL be a 1-game playoff ... but since the Pirates won the season series, that playoff game would be at PNC Park.

I'm typing this on my phone, so I can't provide a link, but Google "mlb tiebreakers" and you'll find it. *shrug* Sorry, guys.
