I guess they're betting it wasn't the steroids that made Melky hit well in 2011.

He may not hit as well as he did in 2010 or 2011, but I'll wager he still gets close to .300 with some pop. I'd rather have him than Jose Tabata.

I'm surprised he took a two year deal, I would have guessed one year to rebuild value then cash in next offseason.

A nice gamble you would have liked to see the Pirates take...of course anything involving smart spending doesnt happen with this organization. Instead they will spend 4 million per year on 2 rod barajas/clint barmes like players...

Yep, no smart spending like trading for AJ or signing Cutch.

They are not going to sign an OF when they have 4 that need at bats and Jones as 5th option.

That assumes that he can rebuild value, now that he's presumably off the juice.

Last I checked, Melky Cabrera didn't play shortstop or catcher.

You can't presume he's off the juice. These guys have ways of avoiding detection and only the ones who slip up get caught. You have no way of knowing who is and who isn't juicing.

Seems like really good value for Toronto. They are going to going to be averaging at least 6 runs per game in their park.

So, assuming that Starling Marte and Cutch are starters in the outfield, we're counting on Travis Snider, Jose Tabata, or Alex Presley to hold down a corner outfield spot for 2013? Wanna see what the Pirates' left fielders (primarily composed of the Tabata/Presley duo) hit in 2012? Here you go:

.221/.271/.364 (.635 OPS)

Yikes. I'd say the Pirates could use a legitimate starting corner outfielder, Willton.

I do too, but I'm betting that one of Snider and Tabata becomes becomes that player. They both have the pedigree to do so, and I don't think it's wise to let that pedigree rot on the bench. Plus, I'm not convinced Melky turned a corner in 2011, particularly in light of his PED use in 2012. I fully expect Melky to revert back to the 4th OF he was from 2006 to 2010 once he gets off the juice.
